The full form of SBI is the State Bank of India. SBI is a public-sector financial institution and a global enterprise. The bank holds 23 % of the market stake in the banking sector in acquisition base and 25% in deposit and loan divisions, enabling it to be India’s largest statutory banking and finance organisation.

The Indian government maintains SBI, and that’s SBI’s biggest shareholder, with about 62 % holding or equity funds in SBI. It has over 24000 branch offices in India and about 200 offices in over 30 nations worldwide. Since 31 March 2017, its assets have been assessed at over $500 billion. The Indian banking sector had more than 20 % stake in the market.

History of SBI

  • The bank was founded in 1806 as Calcutta‘s bank to equip the Indians with essential banking services.
  •  In 1809, after the contribution of the royal charter, the bank was established as the Bank of Bengal.
  •  The Bank of Bombay was founded in 1840, and the Bank of Madras was founded in 1843.
  •  Such three banks merged were identified as presidency banks.
  •  Private subscribers & local governments used a single Presidential bank.
  •  Such banks were granted preferential rights to issue currency through the country that India’s government then headed over in 1861.
  •  The three banks reached jointly in 1921 and finally merged. It was later designated the Imperial bank of India.
  •  As time passed and the banking industry advanced, India’s Imperial Bank became the country’s most prominent corporate company.
  •  The Indian government and the Indian reserve bank took joint control of the Imperial Bank of India in 1955.
  •  With the rules of the Subsidiary Bank Act, those corporations subsequently became bank subsidiaries governed by the princely states.
  •  In 2007-08, India’s government purchased the total shares of India’s State Bank from RBI to decrease conflicts of interest.
  •  The RBI, which was later combined with the job of a central bank, chose over the function of heading and managing the bank.

  •  It is not authorised to buy immovable property but may exclusively purchase structures for authorised commercial purposes.
  •  It has no authority to have the bills rediscounted. Two good signatures will make up the bills.
